Yearbook Pictures and Performing Assembly

Two more events until we can all take a break for the holidays.

All the choirs will be taking their yearbook pictures in performance dress on Thursday, December 16th.  The schedule will be as follows:
8:05--Concert Choir
8:10--Men's Choir
8:15--Women's Choir
8:20--Madrigals
8:30--A Cappella

Friday, we will be performing the "Hallelujah Chorus,"  "Breath of Heaven," and "Little Saint Nick."  If you are not involved in any of those numbers, then talk to your 2nd period teacher to make sure you're coming to the assembly.  "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Breath of Heaven" will be in performance dress--Men's Choir you know what you're wearing for "Little Saint Nick."

Finally--Congratulations on a great performance tonight.  I hope you had fun and I hope you are all proud of what you've accomplished.  Keep up the great work!

Temple Square Performances

TO: A Cappella, Madrigals, Men’s & Women’s Choirs
RE: Temple Square Performances

On Tuesday, November 30, we will be going to Temple Square to do 4 performances.  They are as follows:
            12:00 PM         Church Office Building
1:00 PM           Joseph Smith Memorial Building
            5:30 PM           Assembly Hall
            7:00 PM           North Visitors’ Center

Students will meet in the choir room during 1st period on November 30th where we will rehearse our program—especially those group numbers.  You will be excused for the entire day.  TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE, YOU MUST BE ACADEMICALLY ELIGIBLE.  Students should come to school in performance dress.  For those in Madrigals, you should wear your A Cappella uniform.  After 1st period, students will load the buses to go to Temple Square.  We will meet at the Church Office Building for our performance at noon.

Students will have free time during the time between the JSMB performance at the Assembly Hall performance to either go out to lunch/dinner (at your own cost)or eat food you bring from home.  As on tour, students must travel together in groups of 4 or more.  You may take TRAX to Gateway, or walk to nearby restaurants.  Students must stay in the downtown area.

Although you will be in performance dress, please make sure you bring things to keep you warm when you are outside—coats, hats, gloves, etc.  Ladies, you may want to wear leggings or long underwear under your skirt.  You will also want to wear warm shoes or boots and then change into your performance shoes at the venues.

Students will return to Westlake approximately between 8:45 PM-9:00 PM.  Please make sure you have rides waiting for you, so our chaperones don’t have to wait for you to be picked up.  You probably will not be able to get into the school upon your return.

If you have any questions, please email at mhatch@alpine.k12.ut.us
This will be a great opportunity for us to share our music and add to the holiday festivities.

Thank you.

Concert Choir Festival--November 18

Dear Concert Choir Parents:

On Thursday November 18th, the Concert Choir will be participating in the advance choir middle school festival at Timberline Middle School.  Students will need to be in performance dress. For women they will wear their concert dress, nylons, and black closed-toed dress shoes.  Men will wear black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes, a white button-up dress shirt, and their Westlake tie.

Since we will be gone during lunch-time, we will be having a pizza party with the Vista Heights Concert Choir upon our return to the school.  If the students would like to eat pizza, they will need to pay $2.00 to the financial office by next Wednesday, November 17.  Students are welcome to bring their own lunch if they don’t want to eat pizza.

If any of you would be willing to either ride the bus, or help with the set-up and supervision of the pizza party, will you please email me by Friday, November 12?

Thank you.

Wrapping Paper Fundraiser/Vinyl Stickers

The wrapping paper fundraiser will begin tomorrow and run through November 5.  Order sheets must be turned in on that Friday, November 5.  You will earn 45% of what you sell.  Your profit may be applied to your uniform and/or your tour costs.  If there is any money that you earn over what you need for your outfit, then that money will go into the general choral fund.

We will continue to sell the vinyl stickers.  Please pick up an individual and customized order form if you want to participate in this fundraiser.

Work hard.  These are the last fundraisers we will have this year to help you earn money for your uniform and/or tour costs.

Success Is . . .

A feeling of accomplishment when you know you have worked hard and have performed well.

Westlake Choir Students:
I am so proud of you!!  Thank you for your hard work this past quarter.  I hope you had fun tonight and started to get hooked on the joy that comes from performing well.  I think that tonight's concert was an unqualified success.  We had a great crowd, you sang well, and best of all--I could tell that most of you were really enjoying yourself as you communicated through our music.  Of course there are things that we hope to improve on for our future performances.  And we will keep getting better and better as you keep that discipline of working hard during rehearsals and constantly striving towards excellence.

Thanks again for tonight!  Here's to holiday music tomorrow!

Much Love-
Miss Hatch

Fundraiser Concert --October 11

Our first concert is designed to help students pay for their uniform and/or tour costs.  It is the only choral concert in the school year that has an admission fee which is $5.00/person.  Each person attending the concert is required to have a ticket.  Since the sole reason to charge admission to this concert is to help students raise money, a family pass is not offered.  Concerts are excellent family night activities where families can watch and support their students performing, but are most suitable for children 5 years and older.

If a student has paid their uniform fee, then he/she is entitled to complimentary tickets.  However, if a student's total uniform fee was $10 this year for the T-shirt only (because he/she is a returning student that has previously paid for their ensembles' uniform) then he/she will only receive 2 complimentary tickets.  If the paid uniform fee is more than the $10 T-shirt fee, then that student may receive complimentary tickets for immediate family members only.  Students must pick up these comp tickets by the end of the school day, October 11.

Tickets may be purchased the night of the concert and credited towards individual student accounts.  Students, make sure when your family or friends buy their tickets, they tell the ticket sellers your name so you will get credit for that $5.00 ticket sale.  If no specific name is given, then the money will go in the general choral account.

Encourage people to come to our concert.  We've put in alot of work and we want our school and the community to recognize how well you're doing!!  5 more days to go!!!

New Fundraising Opportunities

Parents and students:

We have two more fundraisers that we will be doing to help students raise money for their uniforms and/or tour.  The cookie dough fundraiser is almost finished.  The cookie dough should be delivered and money collected and turned in at the Financial Office.  Students are now selling tickets for our first concert on October 11.

One new fundraisers involves selling Westlake vinyl decals that can advertise and promote any program at Westlake.  If parents would be willing to help sell at different sporting events, please email me.(mhatch@alpine.k12.ut.us)  The last fundraiser that we will do this year will be selling wrapping paper and other like items.  We will begin this fundraiser in a few weeks.

A Call for Parental Help

Parents:

Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes parent volunteers to help run a successful choral program.  If you are willing to help, will you please email me at mhatch@alpine.k12.ut.us stating if you can help.

Right now I'm looking for at least 2 parents to help sell tickets at the concert on October 11.  The ticket booth should open at 6:00 and go until about 7:20 or 7:30 to catch the late-comers.  I also need about 4 adults to help usher and hand-out programs.  The ushering is to help create an atmosphere that encourages respect for the performers and the other audience members.  So ushers would need to be at the doors to make sure that people enter during applause and not while students are performing.  Ushers would also ask disrespectful patrons to be quiet and if they fail to comply, ask them to leave or refer them to an administrator who is hopefully attending the performance.

I know we all all have busy lives, but I'm looking for parents who can be "Choir Moms" and "Choir Dads" and get a great parent organization started here at Westlake.

Thanks-
Maureen

Lyrics-One Day More & Show People

One Day More
(Men's Choir and A Cappella Men) One day more.
Another day, another destiny.  This never ending road to Calvary.
This men who seem to know my crime will surely come a second time.  One day more
(A Cappella tenors)  I did not live until today,
(Combined A Cappella men) How can I live when we are parted?
(Men's Choir) One Day More
(A Cappella) Tomorrow you'll be worlds away
And yet with you my world has started.
(Women's choir) One more day all on my own
(A Cappella) Will we ever meet again?
(Women's) One more day with him not caring.
(A Cappella) I was born to be with you.
(Women's)What a life I might have known,
(A Cappella) And I swear I will be true.
(Women's) But he never saw me there (gradually A Cappella join singing)
(All Tenors) One more day before the storm
(All Basses) Do I follow where she goes?
(All Tenors) At the barricades of freedom.
(All Basses) Shall I join my brothers there?
(All Tenors) When our ranks begins to form
(All Basses) Do I stay and do I dare
(All Tenors) Will you take your place with me?
(All Choirs) The time is now, the day is here!
(All tenors) One day more.
(All basses) One day more to revolution, we will nip it in the bud.
We'll be ready for these schoolboys, they will wet themselves with blood.
(All tenors) One day more.
(Women's and Concert Choir Women) Watch 'em run amuck. Catch 'em as they fall.
Never know your luck when there's a free-for-all.
Here a little 'dip'. There a little 'touch'.
Most of the them are goners so they won't miss much.
(Altos and Tenors) One day to a new beginning
(Sopranos and Basses) Raise the flag of freedom high,
(Altos and Tenors) Ev'ry man will be a king!
(Sopranos and Basses) Ev'ry man will be a king!
(Altos and Tenors) There's a new world for the winning
(Sopranos and Basses) There's a new wold to be won.
(All) Do you here the people sing?
My place is here.  I fight with you!
(Tenors) One Day More!(4 times)
(Basses) I will join these people's heros, I will follow where they go,
We will learn their little secrets, I will know the things they know.
One more day to revolution, we will nip it in the bud.
We'll be ready for these schoolboys
(A Cappella Women) I did not live until today. How can I live when we are parted?
Tomorrow you'll be worlds away, and yet with you my world has started.
(Women's and Concert Choir) Watch 'em run amuck, Catch 'em as they fall.
Never know you luck when there's a free-for-all.
Here a little 'dip.' There a little 'touch'.
(Tenors) Tomorrow we'll be far away
(All men) Tomorrow is the judgment day.
(All Choirs) Tomorrow we'll discover what our God in Heaven has in store,
One more dawn, one more day, one day more!  More!

Show People

(Madrigals) You're a special kind of people known as show people
You live in a world of your world of your own.
The audience paid plenty to sit there and clap;
Hearing you sing, watching you tap.

(Add A Cappella) Did you know your dentist longs to be in show business?
Your window washer wants to be a star.
And though your analyst may never couch it that way,
You don't know how lucky you are.

(Add Men's Choir--men only) Some police men and detectives dream of show business.
They can't get arrested but still---they sit around the station and fancy this life.
They jeer Sherlock Holmes and cheer Mack the Knife!

(Add Women's Choir--ladies only) Ask your cleaning lady, "Don't you dream of show business?
To vocalize or stretch beside a barre"?
Her affirmative shug as she shampoos your rug lets you know how lucky you are!

(Add Concert Choir--all sing) There's a special kind of aura 'round a show person.
Just ask the next waiter you meet.
(Ladies) He walks in fifth position, his voice is just grand;
(Men) He gives you the check, you give him a hand.
(All) If the boys in valet parking turned to show business, they could scalp a higher ticket for your car;
And my tree surgeon now started taking a bough. Don't you know how lucky you are?

We're a special kind of people known as show people.  We live in a world of our own.
Our days are tied to curtains, they rise and they fall.
We're born every night at half-hour call.
We can't picture being anything but show people, so millions find the whole thing quite bizarre.
But that hum in our hearts when the overture starts helps us know how lucky we are.

It's an honor and a joy to be in show business.
I feel the spotlight hit me and I'm gone!
At the last curtain call, I'm the envy of all, so I know the show must
(Altos and Basses) go on
(Sopranos and Tenors) So thrilling we're show people
(Altos and Basses) go on
(Sopranos and Tenors) So willing we're show people
(Altos and Basses) go on
(Sopranos and Tenors) So thrilling
(All) that show people go on!

Lyrics--Another Op'nin' Another Show & Regards to Broadway

Another Op'nin', Another Show

Another op'nin', another show,
In Philly, Boston or Baltimo'e
A chance for stage folds to say hello
Anoter op'nin' of another show

Another job that you hope, at last
Will make your future forget your past,
Another pain where the ulcers grow,
Another op'nin' of another show!

Four weeks, you rehearse and rehearse
Three weeks and it couldn't be worse
One week, will it ever be right?
Then out o' the hat, it's that big first night!

The overture is about to start.
You cross your fingers and hold your heart,
It's curtain time and away we go,
Another op'nin of another show. (1st ending)
Antoher op'nin, just another op'nin' of another show! (2nd ending)

Regards to Broadway!

How we love being up on the stage!
This is a dream we all share.
Oh, the feeling of spotlights shining!
Nothing we know begins to compare.
Can't you tell from the way that we sing,
It's not gonna take us too long?
We want to sing and dance on old Broadway,
Because we know that's where we belong.

Give my regards to Broadway; Remmember me to Herald Square.
Tell are the gang at Forty-Second Street that we will soon be there.
Whisper of how we're yearning to mingle with the old time throng.
Give my regards to old Broadway and tell them I'll be there 'ere long.

(Men) We're gonna pack our bags.
(Women) Can't wait another day.
(Combined) Next time you see us we'll be on Broadway!

(Singing combined songs)--and tell them we'll be there 'ere long.
We know that Broadway is the place where we belong!

A Successful Start . . .

Students-

I just wanted to thank you for this first week of school. We are off to such a great start with all the ensembles. I'm excited for our choir year!! Here's to more successful music making.

Choir Fundraisers

We will be kicking off our cookie dough fundraiser Monday, August 31. Orders will be due Friday, September 10.

Remember that any money earned can't go towards your participation fee, but it can help cover other costs such as uniforms and tour. If you earn more money than you need to cover your uniform, than that money will go into the general choir fund.

Our other upcoming fundraiser will be our benefit concert. Any ticket sales by students will be used to help students cover their uniforms or tour (if they are going.)

Welcome Back!

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year. I'm excited to meet the new students and to continue our choral journey we started last year.

Two things that should become your mantra--

REMEMBER EXCELLENCE IS ACHIEVED WITH A LITTLE BIT OF TALENT AND A LOT OF HARD WORK AND DEDICATION.

HOW GOOD DO YOU WANT TO BE=HOW HARD ARE YOU WILLING TO WORK

Here's to a great year!!!
